The Stage Golfing Society was founded in 1903 by the famous theatre manager, George Edwardes, rumoured to keep his actors out of the pub.

Over the years, the membership has expanded to include not only actors but singers, dancers and other entertainers. Presidents and Captains have included Sir Laurence Olivier, Eric Sykes and Rick Wakeman. Since 1948, the society has been affiliated to The Richmond Golf Club.
