Initially called The Surrey Golf Club when it opened in 1903, Leatherhead Golf Club was renamed and had an official opening in 1907 with an exhibition match between Open Champions James Braid and Harry Vardon.
In the summer of 1935, the club professional Alfred Perry won the Open Championship at Muirfield. The construction of the M25 in the 1980s saw changes to the course layout and relocation of the clubhouse.
