Founded in 1890 as Sutton Ladies’ Golf Club, the course was designed by Willie Dunn Jnr. and later redesigned by James Braid.

It is considered one of the UK’s finest downland courses. There are sites of archaeological interest on the land with an ancient chalk pit, and the remains of a seventh-century Saxon nobleman discovered in one of four burial barrows. The club is a member of the Association of James Braid Courses.
